Punta Arenas, centro urbano situado a orillas del Estrecho de Magallanes, en la península de Brunswick, en el grado 53-54 latitud sur, aproximadamente, capital de la región de Magallanes, llamada antiguamente Punta Arenosa, traducción literal del nombre inglés "Sandy Point", dado a este pequeño paraje descubierto en el siglo XVII por J. Byron, será el centro urbano del cual nace el desarrollo comercial, cultural y social que habrá de propagarse hasta cubrir todo el territorio magallánico.
Punta Arenas, the capital of the Magallanes region, sits alongside the Straits of Magellan at a southern latitude of approximately 54º south. J. Byron discovered this location on the Brunswick Peninsula in the 17th century and named it "Punta Arenosa" (Sandy Point). The city of Punta Arenas, founded in the mid-1800s, grew into a center for commerce, culture and society that spread its influence over the entire region.
